Surface Preparation
Proper prep ensures that your grout job will last.
Follow these essential steps before grouting.

Clean the Tile Surface
Remove any spacers, dust or debris. Spacers can be left in the grout joint if they are below the surface of the tile. If they are proud of the tile, remove them carefully with a utility knife. Use care to not chip the edges of the surrounding tile. Make sure the joints are uniform and free from thinset mortar. Excess mortar can be carefully scraped off with a utility knife or scraper. The remaining residue can be wiped off with a damp sponge.

Inspect the tiles
Verify that the tile installation is fully cured, securely bonded, and level. Confirm that the surface is dry, stable, and free from contaminants such as oil, soap, or residue. Address any movement, hollow areas, or cracked tiles before starting grout work.

Apply Grout Release
For porous, textured, or matte-finish tiles, pre-treat with a grout release or sealer.
This forms a temporary barrier to minimize staining and simplify cleanup.
Lightly dampen the surface before grouting—avoid standing water or oversaturation.
